Location: Remote within continental United States
Hiring Range: This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $75,000 to $82,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!
Position Summary: This is a leadership position within the National Shelter Support department that plays a critical role in creating and implementing the department’s activities as they relate to achieving No-Kill 2025. The Senior Specialist will play a key role in progressing animal services across the country by influencing animal services policies, strategies, and actions. This will be done through coordinating, directing and performing operational assessments, training and in-field training to align with No-Kill goals.
Essential Duties Responsibilities:
Assist team members in conducting operational assessments to identify lifesaving gaps in shelter/animal control operations of strategic priorities across the country and create written plans on how shelter/animal control partners can fill identified gaps, increase effectiveness and work collaboratively to achieve lifesaving goals and participate in the same as necessary.
Provide direct and ongoing support to team members embedded in shelters as necessary by working with the field operations where the embeds are occurring. Support includes but is not limited to: providing field operational reviews, training and change management strategies, evaluating and making recommendations to current standard operating procedures or creating such if none present, creating and supporting field training programs, call data analyzation, and coaching/mentoring field leadership on changes and programs being implemented.
Working with the Director of National Shelter Support, aid in the development of programmatic incentives for typically unengaged shelters to engage and accept Best Friends support.
Ensure that departmental metrics are being properly tracked and evaluated.
Work closely with regional directors to help support regional priorities, focus and tactics.
Conduct or attend regular meetings with staff and other stakeholders to oversee assigned activities or identify needs that may be evident.
Represents Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to animal control field operations.
Identify and cultivate new relationships with animal welfare and rescue community and other stakeholders with the intent to of reaching NK2025.
Monitor trends in animal welfare field, and advises on positioning, messaging and programming.
Ensure work, and work of direct reports are always consistent with and supportive of the BF organizational brand.

Skills and Experience:
Solid management or leadership experience: 5+ years of experience working for an animal control organization preferably in a leadership role.
Extensive knowledge of major animal welfare/control issues.
Lifesaving oriented and up to date on the newest lifesaving practices and trends.
Prior experience as an animal control officer is required. NACA Certification 1 or 2 is a plus.
Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner. Prior experience in change management, leading teams through change, and change leadership.
Excellent leadership skills with the ability to act decisively with a get-it-done attitude in difficult and fast-paced situations; strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to initiate and influence change; a team player, upbeat, energetic, tactful, and diplomatic, resolve conflict, able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with public speaking and presentation experience. Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels.
Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ positions on issues.
Demonstrated ability to affect change/create positive influence on agencies outside of position’s direct management control.
Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks, demands, and manage multiple projects in various stages of development with different timelines.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; and other systems as needed.
Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills preferred, but not required.
Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns.
Physical Requirements:
Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
Bend, stoop, reach, climb, twist, crawl, stand and walk for an extended period, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to work in weather with temperatures varying between extreme hot and extreme cold.
Ability to be in a shelter environment and work in the presence of both cats and dogs.
The ability to work with organizations and be in shelters that are not no-kill.
Out of town travel for the job is expected to range from 40-60% depending on the location of the jobholder and specific responsibilities and tasks assigned. Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
Ability to drive a Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
Must have a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel and/or drive on behalf of Best Friends, including overnight stays, when needed.
Able to work varying hours, which may include early morning and/or late evening hours.
