Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Storage Engineer to join our IT team as a remote consultant. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, management, and optimization of the company’s storage systems. This role requires expertise in various storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, and cloud-based storage solutions across multiple platforms. The Storage Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of our storage environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and design, implement, and maintain complex cloud, hybrid, and on-prem storage infrastructure solutions to meet business requirements.
• Design, deploy, and maintain storage solutions, including SAN (Storage Area Network), NAS (Network Attached Storage), DAS (Direct Attached Storage) systems and cloud systems.
• Plan and execute upgrades, migrations, and expansions with minimal disruption to operations.
• Configure and maintain storage-related software, including volume managers, file systems, and data replication technologies.
• Monitor storage performance and troubleshoot issues related to latency, I/O bottlenecks, other performance challenges, and security issues before they occur.
• Conduct regular capacity planning to anticipate and address future storage needs.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve issues in a timely manner, including root cause analysis and incident management.
• Implement and enforce security measures to protect data at rest and in transit, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
• Manage encryption, access control, and data masking technologies within the storage environment.
• Develop and maintain scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to automate storage management tasks, improve efficiency, and reduce the risk of human error.
• Plan and conduct regular disaster recovery tests to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement solutions that meet business requirements and support organizational goals.
• Evaluate new technologies and solutions to enhance storage performance, scalability, and efficiency.
• Document system configurations, procedures, and best practices, ensuring comprehensive documentation for reference and future troubleshooting.

Storage Experience

• Extensive knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN, NAS, DAS, and cloud storage platforms (e.g., AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage).
• Experience with storage systems from leading vendors (e.g., Dell EMC, NetApp, Hitachi, IBM).
• Proficiency in backup and recovery solutions, including tools like Avamar, Veeam, CommVault, or Veritas NetBackup.
• Strong understanding of storage protocols (e.g., iSCSI, FC, NFS, CIFS).
• Familiarity with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V) and their integration with storage systems.

Qualifications

• Seven (7) years experience as a Storage Engineer or similar role, with hands-on experience designing, implementing, and managing enterprise storage infrastructures.
• Industry certifications such as SNIA Certified Storage Engineer, EMC Proven Professional, or NetApp Certified Data Administrator are highly desirable.
• Cloud industry certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Certified.
• Strong knowledge of networking protocols, technologies, and standards, including TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
• Experience with Hyper-V, Nutanix, and VMware virtual environments.
• Familiarity with monitoring tools and techniques to analyze storage traffic, diagnose issues, and optimize performance.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex storage issues and implement effective solutions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Occasional onsite visits with customers may be required from time to time.
